He stares at the ocean, blanket scratching his bare shoulders, and he's thankful he can't see his reflection. (His face never changes – with a history of sin written all over it.)
He pulls the blanket to his neck, tightens it – feels it wrap around his throat, pressing, like a noose. (He should have let them hang him.)
"What's on your mind?" Jacob asks. (As if he doesn't know.)
"Tomorrow I'll have been on this island for a hundred years." (A hundred years he's been like this, a hundred years she's been gone.)
Jacob touches Richard's shoulder. "It won't always feel this way." (But Richard doesn't believe that anymore.)
